St Lucia: MP hits out at ‘dangerous’ political arrests

‘Simply wrong’ to use police for intimidation, says Anthony

A St Lucia MP has expressed disbelief over the arrest of two people from his constituency after they took to social media to criticise the prime minister.

Kenny D Anthony, who represents Vieux Fort South, described the situation as a ‘dangerous development’ and added that it was outrageous that the pair have been asked to record a video apologising to Prime Minister Allen Chastanet and his party if they hope to avoid prosecution.

“It is simply wrong to use police officers to intimidate those, who for one reason or other, engage in political dissent by criticising the UWP [United Works Party] leader and the ministers of his government,” said former prime minister Anthony.

“St Lucia has a culture of freedom of expression on all matters, particularly those who express political opinions and that must be protected.

“Citizens should be free to disagree with the government and to speak out about the neglect and difficulties currently being faced in the country.”

The St Lucia Labour Party MP added that he “strongly condemns the charges laid against the young men in question” and is calling for people to contribute to a fund to pay for the pair’s defence.

“This is a very dangerous development with implications to all citizens who use the social media to express their political opinions on issues facing the country.”
