Shark Attack in St Kitts and Nevis, Ross University student to lose her leg

A female student attending Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine in St Kitts is a victim of the shark attack at Booby island in St Kitts and Nevis.

As per the initial information, the female student belonged to Texas, United States, and had gone to Booby Island with her friends to swim in the ocean.

The victim was immediately taken to the nearby hospital in Nevis, where the surgeon performed emergency surgery to save her leg, which was

St. Kitts and Nevis Marine Resources director Marc Williams authenticated that the victim and her female friend were swimming and kayaking near Booby Island when the episode happened.

The victim's friend is unharmed; however, she is badly traumatized by what occurred to her friend.

Two of these students swimming in the ocean were rescued by Coastal Guards and immediately taken to Alexandria Hospital in Nevis.

Authorities stated that additional information was not yet clear; however, it can be derived once these students are interviewed.

Williams noted that the rumors of the victim's leg being amputated were not true, and surgeons are attempting their best to save her leg.

Furthermore, Williams continued that the Marine Resources Department has demanded doctors to taken DNA swabs from the victim's leg to identify what type of shark attacked the students.

It is yet to be identified whether the shark belonged to the same species that killed a female tourist in St Martin last month.

The speed of rescue operations is being investigated to check if coast guard patrols were already in the vicinity of the occurrence.

It is not yet clear how these students entered Booby Island.

The Department of Marine Resources has mentioned an increase in shark activity in the waters of St. Kitts and Nevis and issued a piece of cautionary advice to citizens and residents.
