Andrew Armour, also known as the whale whisperer of Dominica, posted a recent photo on his social media account which showed his encounter underwater with a sperm whale.
Armour has one of the longest-lasting relationships with the sperm whales of Dominica on the Island. For years, he has been taking his catamaran (Passion) out into the sea and having incidental encounters with the resident whales approaching his boat.
Over the years, he has learned their behaviours, families, patterns, and personalities. His passion in life has been using his gift of being able to understand and respect the whales in providing magical and educational experiences for people.
Featured in the photo was Andrew and a very curious calf. While explaining the picture, he said, "It's always important to allow the whale to decide the encounter. I guess this calf didn't know the meaning of personal space!"Andrew Armour is an expert, and he also teaches young sperm whales to spin in the water by spinning himself and showing them how to do it. He also educates the public more about sperm whales during their tours with him.
In 2016, the diving guide known for years as the Whale Whisperer showed why his nickname is appropriate when, while guiding a diving tour off Dominica Island in the Caribbean, he prompted a sperm whale to mimic his actions. Underwater photographer Scott Belt filmed the amazing interaction, which he called "a once-in-a-lifetime experience" and "unbelievable."[embed]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EPtrYuexRjk[/embed]
Dominica is one of the only places in the world where one can find a resident sperm whale population, meaning the females and calves are here all year while the males migrate. They are the largest toothed predators, bearing the largest brains in the world, capable of producing the loudest sounds possible by any animal on earth.
To protect these whales, the government is all set to launch the World's First Sperm Whale Reserve to protect the species under increased threat from human activities.Latest
