Child injured in hit-and-run incident in St John's, Antigua

A young school pupil has been hit by a car in St John's, with the driver failing to stop at the scene.

The incident occurred yesterday just before 4pm local time on Popeshead Street.

The child has suffered at least a broken leg, according to initial reports.

Local media quoted eyewitnesses as saying the boy appeared to be 10 years old and was "crying out in pain" before being rushed to Mount St John's Medical Centre.

The incident caused a long period of bad traffic on what is usually a busy road.

Suspect in custody

The boy's injuries are yet to be confirmed but one source told reporters on the island that his leg was "twisted out of shape" and he was also bleeding from the mouth.

Earlier police said they had the licence plate details and a description of the vehicle.
