Ever wondered who must have been the first person to write a poem, book, or any other piece of writing? Here's an answer for you, Enheduanna is believed to be the world's first author as well as the world's first female author.
Enheduanna lived in the 23rd century BCE in ancient Mesopotamia (approximately 2285-2250 BCE). She was not only a writer but a princess, priestess, and poet. Possessing a nationality of Akkadian Empire, Enheduanna is celebrated as the earliest known named author in world history, as several works in Sumerian literature also.
Among her notable work includes Exaltation of Inanna Temple Hymns. Her existence was first rediscovered by modern archaeology in 1927 when Sir Leonard Wooley excavated the Giparu in the ancient city of Ur and found an alabaster disk with her name, association with Sargon of Akkad, and occupation inscribed on the reverse.
Enheduanna has also received considerable attention for feminism, and the works attributed to her have also been studied as an early progenitor of classical rhetoric. Her piece writings have also been translated into the English language, inspiring millions of literary adaptations and representations.
The archaeological rediscovery of Enheduanna's work has gathered heaps of attention and scholarly debate in contemporary times related to her potential attribution as the first known named author.
What are temple hymns?
They were reconstructed from around 37 tablets from Ur and Nippur, the majority of which belong back to the Ur III and Old Babylonian periods. Every hymn is dedicated to a specific deity. These hymns have also assisted in creating syncretism between the native Sumerian religion and the Semitic religion of the Akkadian empire.
The first-ever English language translated work of Enheduanna was done by Åke W. Sjöberg, which was appreciated and liked by the people.
Not only this, but the first-ever author of the world was also a subject in a televised science series called "Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey", in the episode titled "The Immortals".
