Guest Article: Trump supporters are delighted by Trump’s Nobel Peace prize nomination, taking to twitter to congratulate the “America first” president for the distinguishing honour.

US president Donald Trump received a nomination for the 2020 Nobel Peace prize from a Norwegian MP on Wednesday.

Christian Tybring-Gjedde, a lawyer and a member of the populist Progress Party in Norway, nominated Trump this week for his work in brokering peace between Israel and the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

Speaking to Fox News, Tybring-Gjedde said the nomination was a nod for Trump’s merit. “I think he has done more trying to create peace between nations than most other Peace Prize nominees.”

Speaking to the Associated Press, Tybring-Gjedde said, "No matter how Trump acts at home and what he says at press conferences, he has absolutely a chance at getting the Nobel Peace Prize."

Last month, it was announced that the UAE and Israel agreed to establish full diplomatic ties, as part of a brokered-deal by the Trump administration in an attempt to halt the annexation of occupied land sought by the Palestinians for their future state. The deal is to be signed in the White House by the UAE and Israel on September 15.

Trump’s nomination was welcomed with enthusiasm in a statement released by the White House Wednesday, “This peace deal is a testament to the bold diplomacy and vision of President Trump, and he is honored to be considered by the Nobel Committee.”

Barak Obama was awarded the Nobel Pease prize in 2009, and it’s no secret that Trump has coveted the same distinction ever since he assumed the Oval Office. It is in fact his second nomination.

Within minutes of the announcement, social media erupted with Trump supporters coming out in droves to post their congratulations. Of course, where there’s Trump news, detractors aren’t far off, eager to weigh in as well.

Here are few samples from covering both juxtaposing spectrums.

Trump, an avid Tweeter, who may or may not be banned from his favorite social media platform, that’s if of course, the betting odds were any indication, personally took to Twitter himself to retweet several posts that cited his nomination. Including one from The Jerusalem Post, to which he added, “Thank you.”

Trump’s unexpected nomination has prompted oddsmakers to slash his odds of winning the Nobel Peace prize. Prior to the nomination, Trump was tipped as the 100/1 long shot to win the distinguished honour.

The “America first” president is now trading anywhere between at 20/1, which puts him in neck-and-neck with Microsoft co-founder and philanthropist Bill Gates (20/1); as well, in the midst of other potential candidates: Black Lives Matter (16/1), Moon Jae-in (18/1) Julian Assange (33/1) and Vladimir Putin (33/1).

In terms of world leaders, New Zealand’s Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern is deemed to have a much better chance of winning the 2020 Nobel Peace prize. She leads the betting as the short odds-on favourite to get the nod from the Norwegian Nobel Prize Committee for her commendable leadership through the coronavirus pandemic.

New Zealand remains one of a few countries to have weathered the public health crisis and contained both Covid-19 cases and loss of life to a minimum, so far.

The World Health Organisation comes in at second to win the 2020 Nobel Peace Prize at 5/2, while Swedish teenage activist, Greta Thunberg, is priced as the third best bet at 5/1.

Interestingly, at the start of the year, Thunberg, after staging some of the biggest climate-change rallies across the UK, was tipped as the odds-on-favourite to win a Nobel Peace prize. That favouritism held firm until March, when the global pandemic started to wreak havoc around the world and turned the market on its head by revealing other candidates worthy of consideration.

It’s been an such an extraordinary year that it’s easy to forget it’s an election year in the United States and Trump is seeking to retain his seat in the White House. But with everything that has happened, it’s also equally impossible to rule out Trump’s chances of winning the Nobel Peace prize.
