Dominica plans roll-out of vaccine for 12 to 17 year olds

PM Dr Skerrit said the roll-out of vaccine for 12-17 year olds will begin after 45,500 doses of the Pfizer vaccine lands on August 31,2021.

Prime Minister of Dominica, Dr Roosevelt Skerrit on Friday talked about the significance of protecting children and the elderly from the COVID-19 virus. He said the rising number of cases could come down if people collectively follow the guidelines.

He said 45,500 doses of the Pfizer vaccine from the United States government would reach Dominica by August 31, 2021, from Miami, and the roll-out for 12 to 17 year-olds will begin shortly after.

Prime Minister noted that to vaccinate children over the age of 12, consent from their parents or guardians is necessary.

"If more of us are vaccinated, the country will be in a better situation," said Prime Minister Dr Skerrit.

He noted that 95% of people falling critically sick because of COVID-19 in Dominica are "unvaccinated".

Furthermore, Prime Minister said the health teams are carrying out COVID-19 tests on a regular basis to know the status and minimize the spread of the virus.

Speaking about the importance vaccine, Prime Minister said even scientists have proven that vaccine works.

Even though the COVID-19 vaccine is not mandatory in Dominica, PM Dr Skerrit said the government still continue to encourage people to receive their doses. He said there are still doses available to vaccinate the remaining population.

Prime Minister said the health ministry continues to ensure that the vaccination drive is flexible so more people can receive their doses. He said health departments are engaging with churches so a set-up could be made to immunize after the masses is over. He mentioned that even businesses and organizations could also give out lists, and health officials would visit to vaccinate their members.

He said the government continue to make all necessary resources available to protect and preserve the lives.

PM Skerrit said people who have an underlying disease like cancer, diabetes, heart or kidney disease have a higher risk from coronavirus. He said everyone must come together to safeguard the more vulnerable sectors of society.

Prime Minister also gave out condolences to the family of the 74-year-old man from Pointe Mitchell who succumbed to coronavirus in Dominica.
