We are doing all within our power to ensure safety of every Dominican, PM Skerrit on Hurricane Season

As the hurricane season is approaching, small Caribbean island of Dominica is preparing its best to fight the natural catastrophe. Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit stated in his recent broadcast that new hurricane shelters are also under construction.

Prime Minister recalled the devastation caused by Hurricane Maria and Tropical Storm Erika in the country.

Besides, he also addressed how heavy rains caused by Tropical Storm Gonzalo in the region is a reminder that even that the hurricane season is here and it requires similar attention as COVID-19. He added that people of Dominica needs to be safeguarded at all costs.

Furthermore, the leader stated the significance of resilience for Dominica as the 2017 Hurricane Maria made Dominica lose 22% of its entire GDP. He added that from the past two years, the government working towards enhancing the funds for disaster management.

Prime Minister stated that the damage caused by hurricane maria and tropical storm Erika is still in the recent memory of every Dominican.

Dr Skerrit added that the government is better prepared to protect the families and communities of the country by constructing more resilient shelters and other infrastructure along with improving the disaster management funds.

During addressing shelter operations, the leader stated that "We have made special efforts to improve services in shelters, especially in light of COVID-19, the capacity of new hurricane shelter is being increased"

National disaster coordinator Fitzroy Pascal also joined the pm in further conversation in Anou Palay, where he stated that the country is fully prepared for 2020 hurricane season.

Mr Pascal asked the support of the people and stated that the Office of Disastement Management (ODM) could not work alone, and we all need to collaborate for the greater good of the country.

He added that a comprehensive disaster management approach is being taken out in communities to look at all the hazards and all the people.
