Volcano update: No seismic tremors recorded in last 12 hours

UWI Seismic Research Institute reported on Tuesday evening that no seismic tremors had been recorded in La Soufriere volcano in the last 12-hours.

It added that measurements of sulphur dioxide flux at la Soufriere were again undertaken along the west coast with the assistance of coastguards. The Research Institute stated that measurements yielded an average SO2 flux of 350 tons per day.

Since the first initial depressurisation noted immediately following the April 9 explosive phase, the continuous GPS network has recorded a decrease in the overall rates of horizontal and vertical movement. Furthermore, it added that the volcano continues to erupt, and the pattern of seismic activity over the last few days is typical of the growth and destruction of lava domes.

"Explosions with accompanying ashfall of similar or larger magnitude can occur with the little or no warning impacting St Vincent and neighbouring islands," added UWI Seismic Research Institute.

The alert continues to remain red, and people with respiratory diseases are advised to remain indoors as the volcanic ash can be hazardous for people with breathing disease like asthma and other allergies. Entire St Vincent and the Grenadines have turned "grey" because of the volcanic ashfall. The recent videos that surfaced on social media show how massively the country is experiencing ash rain.

The cleaning of the ashes from around the island is estimated to be more than $100 million, while the infrastructure loss would also be numbered a similar amount.

St Kitts and Nevis, Dominica have pledged $2 million dollars collectively to help St Vincent and the Grenadines. Many organizations, including the United Nations, have also declared to provided financial support.

A charity fund has been set up by some private individuals as well to collect financial support for the country.

Neighbouring islands are currently making all efforts by donating non-perishable food items and water.
