LIAT flights disrupted due to industrial action

LIALPA pilots have refused to fly ATR 72 aircraft until agreement reached

Wednesday, 7th June 2017

A number of LIAT flights throughout the Caribbean have been cancelled today as members of the Leeward Islands Airline Pilots Association (LIALPA) take industrial action.

There have also been delays on various routes.

This is the latest chapter in an ongoing battle between the union and the airline.

Deferred – and in some cases late – payment of pilot salaries has been at the centre of the dispute, as well as the failure by LIAT management to implement a new renumeration structure, including pay rises.

In a statement, the airline said: “LIAT regrets to advise the travelling public of industrial action by the members of the Leeward Islands Airline Pilots Association (LIALPA).

“In the ongoing negotiations for higher wages, which includes the operation of the ATR aircraft, the pilots have taken action to refuse to fly the ATR 72 aircraft until an agreement is reached.”

A further update will be issued later this morning.

Only last month the threat of industrial action was dropped following last-minute talks between the pilots and their employer.

Julie Reifer-Jones, CEO of LIAT, said: “LIAT apologises for these disruptions to our passengers and their plans and wishes to reiterate its commitment to work with LIALPA to resolve any issues.”
