Police in St Kitts and Nevis have warned cannabis smokers to stop their activities in public places and follow the rule of land.

Superintendent of Police and Divisional Commander for District A- Cromwell Henry noted that the government had decriminalized small amounts of "cannabis." However, the consumption of the same in public places is still an offense.

The senior police official commanded that smoking of cannabis and marijuana in events and public places should immediately stop.

Superintendent of Police and Divisional Commander for District A- Cromwell Henry reminded people of Section 6A (b) of the Drugs (Prevention and Abatement of the Misuse and Abuse of Drugs) Act.

He continued that under this section, any person consuming cannabis or cannabis resin in a public place should be fined with a fixed penalty notice for one thousand dollars.

He stated that if the guilty person fails to pay the penalty amount, he or she shall face the consequences of five days in prison or twenty hours of community service.

Surpretendent appealed to all the marijuana and cannabis smokers to have consideration for all those other people who do not smoke.

Mr. Henry stated that such activities should only be limited to one's personal space and not on the public streets of the country.

Commissioner of Police, Hilroy Brandy, described to the Cabinet on Monday, January 18, 2021, that the random smoking of marijuana is producing consternation in society.
