Rare Sight: Huge Leatherback Turtle spotted at Maracas Beach Trinidad during daylight
Trinidad and Tobago: In a rare occasion, a huge Leatherback Turtle was spotted on Tuesday at Maracas Beach in Trinidad. The arrival of the species during daylight marked the beginning of turtle nesting season in the island nation. As the environmentally sensitive species came to the shores of the island, the staff members of the Urban Development Corporation (Udecott) made sure that it returned safely to the water. The arrival of the leatherback turtle to the beach during daylight is a rare occurrence in this part of the North Coast, Trinidad.

The Corporation has also urged the general public that during the nesting season from March 1 to August 31, everyone must be careful and must refrain from engaging in those activities which are likely to disrupt the nesting behaviours of sea turtles.

Meanwhile, the Udecott has also advised the public that they must not indulge in biking or driving vehicles on the beach and the children must not build any sand castles. People must also avoid using any headlights or fires along the beaches in Trinidad and Tobago.

It was also said that the beachgoers must not sit on the turtles as this can cause severe harm to their organs which can also lead to their deaths.

The Corporation urged the public to report any type of this activity immediately to the officials of the Forestry Division, the Environmental Management Authority (EMA), or the Trinidad & Tobago Police ServiceĀ in order to prevent such things in the near future.

It is to be noted that Trinidad is known as the premier destination in the Caribbean for Turtle watching. This is why people from all across the world arrive to the island to watch the rare sights of turtles laying eggs on the shores of the beaches.

The government of Trinidad and Tobago also takes every possible action to protect these marine animals and takes strict actions against the ones who cause any harm to any of the five species of marine turtles visiting the shores of the island.
