PM Roosevelt Skerrit in Mexico to attend 6th CELAC summit

Prime Minister of Dominica Dr Roosevelt Skerrit is currently in Mexico to attend the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) summit.

Prime Minister of Dominica Dr Roosevelt Skerrit is currently in Mexico to attend the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) summit. The Secretary of Agriculture and Rural Development of the Government of Mexico, Víctor Villalobos, welcomed the PM after his arrival on Friday afternoon.

PM Skerrit will be discussing the impacts and the region's response towards the COVID-19 pandemic. He is also likely to share the climate-resilient plans as the region is often a target of natural disasters.

Mexico is hosting the fourth summit of the regional body, and 16 leaders have affirmed their presence, Mexico's Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard declared on Friday.

All member countries from Latin America and the Caribbean will discuss the region's response to the coronavirus pandemic and discuss methods to create funding to respond to climate change disasters.

It is also suspected that Mexico, as president pro tempore of CELAC, will push for a combined proposal to replace or reform the Organization of American States (OAS).

Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro also arrived in Mexico to attend the summit. Several other leaders, including President of Cuba Miguel Diaz-Canel, President of Guyana Dr Irfaan Ali and more.

CELAC has over 32 member states, including Dominica, Antigua and Barbuda, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Bahamas, Argentina, Dominican Republic, Co-operative Republic of Guyana, Nicaragua, Saint Kitts and Nevis, St Lucia, Panama, Trinidad and Tobago, Venezuela, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Belize, Chile, Guatemala, Grenada, St Vincent and the Grenadines, Uruguay and Suriname.
