Opposition leader pledges ‘return decent government to St Kitts and Nevis’ if elected

Former PM Denzil Douglas was in power from 1995 to 2015

Denzil Douglas, leader of the opposition in St Kitts and Nevis, has given a commitment to the nation that he will strive for “a restoration of a decent government” if his party wins the next election.

And the St Kitts-Nevis Labour Party (SKNLP) leader, who has been an MP for 28 years, pledged to continue his service to constituents.

“I give a commitment that you will never be last and never be in the background. You will be first and you will be in the front at all times,” Douglas said.

He was speaking at a ‘praise and thanksgiving’ service at Bethel Moravian Church, Parsons Village – part of the area he has represented since 1989.

Tributes were paid to the veteran political by a number of parliamentary colleagues, including SKNLP Deputy Leader Earl Asim Martin, Deputy Chairman Cedric Liburd, and Marcella Liburd on behalf of Labour Women.

'Responsible investments'

Douglas, the federation’s second prime minister, is the longest serving head of government, leading from July 1995 to February 2015.

“As the leader of our great party I will never forget the stewardship and responsibilities that I have,” said the seven-term parliamentarian.

"Those responsibilities are to ensure that the resources at our disposal are invested in a way that those who are at the constituency leadership level would realise their own resources and those resources are invested so that at the end of the day, we will achieve the victory again for the benefit of all the people of St Kitts and Nevis."

He vowed that investment of the talents must ensure that whatever is invested “will grow and multiply and return so that at the end of the day, we will be better prepared to take on the struggles and challenges of returning St Kitts and Nevis to a decent government under Labour.”
