Lithuania rallies to raise funds for hurricane-hit Dominica

Baltic state responded to UN appeal

The foreign minister in Lithuania has announced that is has raised €10,000 (US$11,600) to help rebuild Dominica.

The eastern Europe state responded to an appeal by the United Nations’ Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, which hopes to raise €27 million (US$31.3 million).

Dominica felt the full force of Hurricane Maria in September, shaken through the night by category five storm’s 160mph winds.

Almost 30 people died in the disaster, with the rest of the island suffering severe damage.

The money will be transfer to the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF).

A number of other nations have rushed to help the Nature Island.

China recently said it would be donating US$14 million for recovery efforts, bring their total contributions up to $15 million.

And neighbouring Caribbean states have all mobilised to assist Dominicans following the hurricane, which came just a week after Hurricane Irma battered Barbuda.
