The Saint Lucia Labour Party Youth Organization (SLPYO) is concerned about the traumatic incident that took place at the Bordelais Correctional Facility (BCF), pertaining to the sexual or physical violation of a 16-year-old female in her holding cell allegedly by three inmates housed in the same institution. The SLPYO regards the incident as a breach of the human rights of the young woman. The matter is worrisome since our prisons are supposed to be places for reflection and rehabilitation not violation. The SLPYO believes that this incident will cause further mental damage to the young woman who ought to be presumed innocent until proven guilty. The SLPYO calls for an impartial and complete investigation on the incident and expresses its dissatisfaction with the official explanations given so far. According to the SLPYO our young people even when they are accused of wrong doing and in custody should be protected by the state and not put in harms way during their detention.
