Haiti reports its first coronavirus death

Monday, 6th April 2020

Haiti on Sunday said its first novel coronavirus death, a 55-year-old man who had underlying health conditions.

The health ministry stated the man suffered from diabetes and hypertension.

He was one of only  21 showed cases of the COVID-19 virus in Haiti, a demographically younger country in which over half of those diagnosed with the ailment have been under age 45.

Only 218 test for the new coronavirus has been done in Haïti for the reason that first two cases were confirmed March 19, however, leading to a complaint from the country extensive medical network of the government's dealing with of the pandemic.

Since the virus first appeared, the authorities have announced strict measures to prevent it, but they have now not been rigorously followed or enforced.

A ban on gatherings of 10 or more humans is automatically violated, notably within the country's crowded public transportation system.

Stay-at-home measures, like the ones in a location in Italy and France, are tough to apply in Haiti because the sizeable majority of its inhabitants depend upon the casual economy to survive.

The density of the population of Port-au-Prince, the most populous capital within the Caribbean, with 3 million humans, also makes strategies like social distancing impractical.
