In a sudden turn of events, a Dominican man's cravings for some chicken and potato fries led to him being sentenced to serve 34 months in prison.
According to the information, on April 24, Brent Peter broke out in a neighbour's house to steal something of value which he intended to sell for purchasing food.
The officials said that Celine Bruney and her son both were sleeping when the son was suddenly awake by a strange noise. Upon seeing his home, he saw someone entering the kitchen and walking towards her mother's bedroom.
The son used his cellphone's flash and saw Peter armed with a knife and upon seeing him, the robber fled the scene after snatching a mobile phone valued at $379, which was inside the bedroom.
The following day, the family reported the incident to the police who immediately went to Peter's home for questioning. Initially, he denied all the blames and said he was innocent but eventually he admitted his offense to the police.
On Monday, the suspect plead guilty to theft and Magistrate Laudat asked him the reason behind his actions to which he said that he just wanted $20 to buy some chicken and chips. He added that he was hungry so he ended up going in the house to see if he could find some cash but ended up stealing a small phone.
He continued to say that he did not went to steal anything and was just craving for some good food. At the end, he showed some respect to the court and apologised for his behavior and outlined, "Sorry for stealing in you all country."
Upon listening the suspect, the court erupted in laughter leading the judge to put to him to prison for 34 months. The judge also mocked by saying that he is sending him somewhere where he will always get food even if it means that he will have to pay for it himself.
