Dominica: PM Roosevelt Skerrit talks about government's biblical duties

Prime Minister of Dominica, Dr Roosvelt Skerrit stated on Monday that the government sees its obligations as biblical duties.

Prime Minister, while talking about the "National Housing Programme" noted that the, "When this government gives homes to the citizens of Dominica we do not see it as a political responsibility, but as our Christian and biblical responsibility to look after our people." He emphasised in a photo caption that primary requirement of all human beings is to own a place to call "home" and provide shelter for the families. Dr Skerrit further mentioned that "Overcoming poverty is not just a task charity, but one of justice. Guided by this, I have always believed that everyone should have safe, decent and affordable housing."

The Dominican Prime Minister says that he believes that every person should have a roof over their heads and these years of housing initiative have also empowered people to live more wholesome lives.

The government of Dominica, under the leadership of Dr Roosevelt Skerrit, aims to construct over 5000 climate-resilient homes for its people.

The initiative was announced to rehabilitate people displaced in Petite Savanne due to Hurricane Maria and Tropical Storm Erica. More than eleven-hundreds homes are already constructed, and recently more homes were handed over in  Bellevue Rawle Development.

The government of Dominica have continued funding to the "National Programme" that provides financial support to the "housing initiative".

Furthermore, the small Caribbean nation also aims to be the world's first climate-resilient nation considering the impact of climate change on the region.

The continuous impact of global warming has made the Caribbean region vulnerable to natural catastrophes that cause millions of dollar in damages and destructs the livelihood of people every hurricane season.

Besides this, the government of Dominica is also assisting people in re-constructing private homes that were destructed by Hurricane Maria and Tropical Storm Erika in recent years.
