Dominica: Agriculture meeting highlights progress centered around 2030 target

Roseau, Dominica: Roland Royer, the Minister of Agriculture of Dominica convened a meeting with the frontline extension staff of the Agriculture division. The meeting was held at Agriculture Science Complex at One Mile Portsmouth.

Under this, the staff from seven agricultural regions got an opportunity to present progress on regional work programs for the financial year 2023/24. The staff put forth the challenges and focused on recommendations to improve service delivery to the clientele.

“The dialogue will continue leading up and throughout the fiscal year (2024/2025),” mentioned the agriculture ministry.

Considerably, this is due to the fact that the ministry keeps the track of the progress in an effort to meet the $700 million by 2030 target. Jullan Defoe, the minister of state for agriculture and fisheries has presented to the nation that sector could significantly contribute up to $700 million to Dominica’s GDP by the year 2030.

Chief Fisheries officer Defoe as well highlighted that the country is dependent on the youth to meet the target, and that more youths are expected to go into fisheries and agriculture to boost the food security and GDP revenue.

Last year, in the month of April, the officer mentioned that the ministry is looking to increase atleast $47 million each year. And, the meeting held significantly had a great contribution in getting aware of how far the ministry has reached in respect to the 2030 target.

The light was casted on an aspect that more youth are registering themselves for the training for fisheries business. This further will boost self-employment and meet national food targets.

Importantly, the agriculture sector being one of the sectors being ahead in contributing towards the economic growth of the nation through such ideas and projects would surely take the country to the new heights. And, this commits the authority’s strengthened idea towards ensuring the growth and development of nation.
