Compelling video footage has emerged from Dominica, showing a walk from Castle Comfort to the capital, Roseau, just one day after the island was ripped apart by Hurricane Maria.
The 40-minute clip gives one of the clearest pictures yet from the ground.
The full carnage includes buildings missing walls and roofs, powerlines strewn across roads and trees lifted from the ground.
People can be seen walking around and surveying the damage in their communities.
Even some of the strongest buildings in Roseau, including the offices of the prime minister, have suffered severe damage.
Communication with the country, which has a population of 72,000 people, is slowly returning. Some of the rural locations are only accessible by road, with the full extent of the devastation not yet known.
Yesterday Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit gave his first interview, shedding tears when recalling the battering Dominica has taken. The island “is going to need all the help the world has to offer,” he said.
“We have no running water now, we have no electricity, we have no power, we have very limited telecommunication services… private homes have been damaged, some beyond any form of repair, all flat on their faces. Many of our schools have been destroyed.”
