Trinidad and Tobago: The dead body of 22-year-old Nikhel Greene, who went missing on Sunday afternoon in Trinidad while swimming in the waters of Orosco Bay, has been discovered by authorities. The male’s body was recovered just before midday on Tuesday at Rincon Bay, Salybia.

According to the information, authorities will be conducting a post-mortem this week to confirm the cause of his death.

The authorities reported that around 4:15 pm on Sunday, Nikhel Greene went into the sea which was located off Orosco Road in Mature. He was accompanied by a group of friends, all of whom went for a swim.

After around 15 minutes, the victim encountered difficulties and was seen going under the water. Following this, his friends tried to locate him but were not able to locate him.

The group notified the police officials and the Coast Guard, and a team led by Cpl Rampersad responded, but because of the lighting conditions, the search had to be called off. The police continued their search for two days until the discovery was made yesterday morning.

The police said that a total of 10 persons died as a result of drowning for the year thus far. The last drowning occurred on Sunday, 14th April 2024, when 21-year-old Jerron Elder of Jack Terrace in Lendore Village, Chaguanas, drowned while bathing at Las Cuevas beach.

Last week, a couple also died due to drowning after their car skidded off the road and landed in the sea. It was reported that the couple’s vehicle lost its control, leading it to go inside the sea in Chaguaramas on Sunday night.

These incidents have caused sadness among the citizens and residents of Trinidad and Tobago, with several people taking to Facebook to express their condolences to the families of the victims.

“Condolences to the families fly high with the angels in heaven,” wrote a user named Annie, while another user recalled her own experience and said, “So very tragic and heartbreaking. One night many years ago, a young family member died in a vehicular accident on Chaguaramas stretch as well. Years later, we also lost my 20-year-old nephew in a horrific car accident in Canada. Heartfelt sympathy and Condolences to the family. We know the pain.”
