$1.5M fraud in Guyana Police Force: Marcelene Washington granted bail for $2,50,000 defrauding

Senior Superintendent of Police (ag) Marcelene Washington was granted bail in the sum of $250,000 after appearing at the Georgetown Magistrate's Court charged with three counts of conspiracy to commit a felony. She was not required to plead.

The court heard that Washington, Lorraine Saul and Roxanne Griffith-Adams, conspired with each and other persons to defraud the Guyana Police Force $1.5 million by falsely claiming that the money was for meals provided by the TSU for officers who were on duty from October 16 to 31, 2021.

The prosecutors levelled the same charge against Washington, Lorraine Saul and Frank Jackman-Wilburg, stating that they attempted to defraud the Force by falsely claiming $2.2 million to cover meals they stated were given by the Felix Austin Police College Mess to ranks who gave fixed-point duty at Mounted Branch between October 16-31, 2020.

Washington was not asked for plea since the charges were criminal. She was given bail in the sum of $250,000 on the charges and was described by an attorney at law, Dexter Todd.

All three matters were dismissed to June 16, 2021, for report as to whether the charges will proceed as review or accountable. These charges were originally filed on April 21, 2021, but the accused was out of the jurisdiction.

The charges arose from a massive probe being carried out by SOCU in connection to over $300 million committed at the Police Finance Office by several high-ranking officers of the Guyana Police Force.
