St Kitts and Nevis Labour Party candidate for upcoming general elections, Marcella Liburd recently stated that single mothers are laid off from their jobs in the country amidst the coronavirus crisis.
Liburd made this statement in her party's virtual meeting where she discussed the predicaments currently suffered by the people of the federation because of the lockdowns.
She added that it is not only the hospitality sector which is financially impacted by the virus, but other businesses are under similar loses too.
"Hospitality sector is not the only sector which is facing difficulties, even private school nurseries in St Kitts and Nevis are facing huge loses, because no children coming to attend classes, the owners are unable to pay their rents, people are struggling," added Ms Liburd.
Liburd, who was also the first female speaker of the national assembly of the country, has always been very vocal about issues concerning the women. In her statement, she added that a large number of women are laid off from their jobs in St Kitts and Nevis, and they have been at homes from more than three weeks, unable to feed their families.
Marcella Liburd also told that she recently spoke to a woman who is a single mother and a former employee at Marriot Resorts St Kitts, who has been under perplexity because she is incapable of supporting her children because of the unemployment as the result of COVID-19's impact on country's hospitality industry. " The lady is laid off from Marriot, she has been to Social Securities office, and other departments in a hope to receive the funds announced by the PM, but she got nothing."
As per Marcella, miscommunication is going around within the government as everyone associated is making different statements.
"There is poor communication, PM says one thing, police says the other, people are confused because of this lack of clarity."
