Guyana: UNICEF Regional Director Jean Gough meets Minister Priya Manickchand

Priya Manickchand- The Minister of Education Guyana received a courtesy call from Jean Gough, the United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund's (UNICEF) Regional Director, Latin America, and Caribbean Regions, at her Brickdam office.
The discussion was centered on the Ministry's plans to ensure that each child is given the opportunity to receive the education they rightly deserve.
According to the press release, among the issues highlighted were the Ministry's push for the safe reopening of schools, the expansion of the school feeding programme, textbooks distribution, and the expansion of the Guyana Learning Channel.
Present at the meeting were Nicola Johnson, Chief Planning Officer at the Ministry of Education, Nicolas Pron, UNICEF Representative to Guyana and Suriname; Irfan Akhtar, Deputy Representative and Audrey Michele Rodrigues, Education Specialist.
On March 01, the UNICEF Representative to Guyana and Suriname, Nicolas Pron, formally introduced UNICEF's Country Programme Document (CPD) 2022-2026.
The CPD outlines UNICEF's priorities for the next five years, which align with the Government of Guyana's endeavors to attain the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) for women and children. It is also assisting in the alleviation of key deprivations that children face, such as health, nutrition, water and sanitation, education, and social protection.
"The goal of this Guyana cooperation programme is to assist the government in implementing its commitments to respect, protect, and fulfill children's rights as outlined in the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child."
