Govt of Dominica & UNDP planning to start workshops for Kalinago people

Roseau, Dominica: The Government of the Commonwealth of Dominica has been planning to commence a series of workshops to provide aid to the people belonging to the Kalinago tribe, the island’s indigenous people.

The workshops would focus on providing access to climate financing to build more resilient communities.

The government of Dominica would conduct these workshops in collaboration with United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) through EnGenDER.

UNDP mentioned, “The Government of the Commonwealth of Dominica, with support from UNDP through, EnGenDER launched a series of workshops to help the island's indigenous Kalinago people access climate financing to build more resilient communities. Here's why these workshops are important!”

The Minister of the Environment, Rural Modernisation, and Minister of Kalinago Affairs, Conzier Frederick, said that the space is on the frontline of climate change, and the issue must be addressed as soon as possible.

He stated, not everyone might be behind producing emissions, but it will affect everyone, keeping in mind which, all must actively participate in the movement to improve the condition.

The minister was quoted saying, “This project is important for us here in the Kalinago space because we are on the frontline of climate change. We do not produce all of the emissions that cause those changes, but we are affected by it.”

“So it is important for people within the community to participate in the movement to push forward for the first climate-resilient country,” he added.

A week before, the minister for Kalinago upliftment stated that a project had been adopted by the government to improve the knowledge and awareness about climate change and disaster risk management.

The Building Resilience & Adaptive Capacity to Climate Change and Disaster Risk project was officially started on February 2, Wednesday, in the Kalinago Territory and it is expected to be completed in October 2023. The project is an initiative under the Caribbean Development Bank Disaster Risk Reduction Fund (CDRRF).
