Trinidad: 2-year-old pronounced dead after being found unresponsive in babysitter’s care

Trinidad and Tobago: A two-year-old baby was pronounced dead after he was rushed to the Couva District Hospital in an unresponsive condition on Friday, June 14, 2024.

The police said that they had identified the deceased as two-year-old Xaevi’el Glasgow, a resident of Mon Desir Road, South Oropouche. It was reported that the infant’s father, Jaybril Glasgow, left him in the care of a babysitter, who has been identified as Kelly Hope, at her residence in Grant Street, Couva.

The father said that around 8 pm, when he went to take his son, he found him in an unresponsive condition, following which he immediately notified the emergency health services, who responded and rushed him to the Couva district health facility, where he was pronounced dead by the medical officers around 9:03 pm.

Meanwhile, the officers of the Couva Police Station were subsequently contacted, and the first responders, including PC Parris, WPC Sotillo, and PC Seemungal, responded and were informed by the medical staff that they found a swelling on Glasgow’s forehead, which is why a mortem was ordered to confirm the death of the baby.

The police officials also investigated the babysitter’s home to find some evidence that may have caused the death of the infant.

Meanwhile, the father took to Facebook on the occasion of Father’s Day to express his sadness over the infant’s death. He also said he tried to get to the babysitter, but someone had already hidden her from him. The father further said, “Ain’t nothing happy about this Father’s Day for me. I pray my son’s soul flies high and enters heaven’s gates where he’ll be in a better place.”

Glasgow was the second baby that died after being taken to a hospital unresponsive and with marks of violence on their bodies for the month thus far.

Just on Thursday, June 13, 2024, an autopsy was ordered to confirm the cause of death of one-month-old Jerel Bains of Beetham Gardens, who was taken to the Port-of-Spain general hospital unresponsive and with bruises on his chest.

It is reported that Bains’ relatives are still waiting on the results of an autopsy to determine how the infant died, but they believe that a raid by police carried out at the residence where he resided may have contributed to the death.
