The authorities in St Kitts and Nevis warned the general public that slaughtering animals in the backyard of their homes or personal spaces is illegal and should not be practised. Deputy Chief Environmental Health Officer Glenville Leader made the statement during a radio address.
During the address, he said as per the "offensive trade regulation" it is "illegal" to slaughter animals in the backyard. He noted that the regulation prohibits the killing of poultry, animals such as cows, sheep, and goats, or dealing with blood, boiling any products linked to this activity, including the storing hides and guts. He added that scrapping and disposal of the entrails of an animal is called gut scraping.
He advised that all the animals must be taken to an abattoir for slaughtering purposes. Glenville said that this protects people from catching any infections from the dead animal and also protects the environment.
“We have built the abattoir which is designed for that particular purpose, and so it has all the requirements essential to ensure that the meat meets certain conditions before it comes to the general public,” Leader said.
He added that when people do not follow the appropriate butchering protocols, they put the general public’s health at risk.
“There is also another law, which is General Market and Meat Act, which states that the CMO shall specify any area for the slaughtering of meat, and the Basseterre Abattoir and the Sandy Point Abattoir are meant for that purpose,” the Deputy Chief Environmental Health Officer stated.
