Barbados: Following the remarks over social media 'fake news', the Leader of the Democratic Labour Party of Barbados, Verla DePeiza, questioned the Barbados Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley, terming her dismissed remarks as verified.

In a statement issued, Peiza said that the Prime Minister earlier advised people of Barbados not to take information from social media, and there were initial allegations of fake news ins response to specific questions.

“Most of the dismissed claims have since been verified. It’s been revealed that the Barbados Prison Service, the Royal Barbados Police Force, Members of the Ambulance Service and the Queen Elizabeth Hospital all have persons who have tested positive for COVID-19,” said the leader of Democratic Labour Party, Verla DePeiza. However, Prime Minister Mottley had earlier urged people and those engaged in what she called a social media campaign of panic to stop. She emphasized on the people of Barbados to listen to only official sources of the government as most of the information flowing on the internet is fake.

She added that this is a serious situation and it is a challenging situation and it requires cooperation, but I know that there are discipline and the ability to follow a very clear mission to which we all subscribe so that we can deal with it. What does this mean? Definitely for the next seven days, but possibly for 14, that there should be greater discipline from the Barbadians.

PM Mottley also indicated that gatherings of 50 persons would not be allowed due to the increase in already positive cases. As such, she indicated that there should not be any number of banquets, social ceremonies, fetes, or limes. In her comments, she expressed concern that some people have been promoting lockdown limes.
