Jamaica: Opposition MP Winston Green dies

Jamaican politician and member of Parliament for St Mary South Eastern Winston Green died suddenly overnight.

He has been described as a devoted and dedicated public servant by his colleagues.

The People’s National Party MP, who was also a dental surgeon, only began complaining of feeling ill hours before his death.

"Dr Green committed his life professionally and politically to serving the Jamaican people. He was a dedicated servant of the people and a man faithful to his commitment to his family, his profession, his constituents and his party," said Peter Phillips, president of the PNP.

Andrew Holness, Jamaica's prime minister, is shocked by the news, according to his spokesman.

Further details surrounding the sad news are expected later on Monday.

In the February 2016 general election, Green’s seat was initially awarded to the Jamaica Labour Party candidate.

Following a recount it was decided that Green had squeezed in by nine votes after a mistake in the counting.

But his second term didn’t begin until a recount by magistrates the next month, with final results that saw Green taking the seat by five votes.
