Gov’t declares September 19 as public holiday to observe 2nd anniversary of Hurricane Maria

Government of the Commonwealth of Dominica today declared September 19th a public holiday to allow public of Dominica to attend the concert at Windsor Park Stadium

Government of the Commonwealth of Dominica today declared September 19th a public holiday to allow public of Dominica to attend the concert at Windsor Park Stadium, observing the second anniversary of the passage of Category 5 Hurricane Maria in the year 2017.

“The Government of the Commonwealth of Dominica has confirmed that Thursday, September 19, 2019, will be a public holiday, as the country reflects on the second anniversary of the passage of Hurricane Maria.” Government posted.

Prime Minister Dr Roosevelt Skerrit said “It is official. Thursday, September 19, 2019, will be a full public holiday. I want it to be a day of reflection for all Dominicans, as we celebrate how far this country has come after the passage of Hurricane Maria.”

Meanwhile, a press release by the government stated that President Charles A. Savarin has signed a proclamation declaring Thursday, September 19, 2019, a public holiday to be observed throughout the country.

“Hurricane Maria struck Dominica on Monday, September 18, 2017, leaving us almost with nothing. Since then the country has seen a massive recovery programme which has including the continuous repairs to homes and the construction of new resilient homes for Dominicans, extensive dredging of rivers, and major improvements to infrastructure,” the press release read.

Prime Minister also added, “Dominica will pause and reflect on Thursday, the 19th of September, to recognise the second year since the passage of Hurricane Maria. On this day, from 4 pm at the Windsor Park Stadium, the Government of the Commonwealth of Dominica will lead the citizens, residents and friends of our country in giving thanks for life and celebrating everything we have accomplished in a short space of time after surviving the worst disaster in our lifetime. I am urging all of you to come together in bodies, hearts and minds, and unite just as we did when we began picking up the pieces after Maria!”
