The Government of Dominica has contributed $100,000 to the cancer society to meet the needs of some of its members.

The contribution was in an effort to subsidise the cost of cancer treatment and provide assistance to the Dominica Cancer Society.

Kenneth Darroux, minister for health, addressed the House of Assmebly during the supplementary estimates debate, giving details of this contribution.

“As a result of the generous nature of this administration reaching out to the people because we know the prevalence of cancer here in Dominica, and then we’re doing our best to ensure that these patients that they receive the treatment that they need.”

The health minister said he is anticipating that soon enough – especially with the new national hospital and additional specialised doctors – less Dominicans will need to travel overseas for treatment.

It is the policy of the Roosevelt Skerrit government to take care of those less fortunate, Darroux added.

For the last accounting period, the Ministry of Health received a supplementary estimate of over $5.8 million.
