PM Harris inspects new food court in Basseterre

Prime Minister of St Kitts & Nevis Dr. Timothy Harris examined preparations for the new food court in Basseterre, which is presently in underway.

St Kitts and Nevis: Prime Minister of St Kitts & Nevis Dr. Timothy Harris examined preparations for the new food court in Basseterre, which is presently in underway. Prime Minister said, " Water, electricity, restrooms & security are nearly finished. Completion is expected the first week in August 2021. " " It was a delight to inspect the area north of Square Street designated for our food truck vendors," PM added. In addition, on Friday Community Vendor Markets initiative launched with locally grown and produced food and goods on sale at dedicated sites in Borryeaux, Ponds Pasture and Conaree.

Also, Prime Minister notified that Lower Shear-Lane has been finalised as the location for our street food vendors.

The site will include a mobile restroom, water and lighting. We're moving fast. Vendors will have access as early as next week. Agriculture on both islands is mainly rainfed. Approximately 80 % of the land on Saint Kitts is owned by the government; meanwhile, on Nevis, 70% of the land is under private ownership. In Nevis, the Ministry of Agriculture reports that 162 ha are under fruit trees, and there is 202 ha of pasture land for livestock and temporary crop, including vegetables. Notably, Premier of Nevis Mark Brantley continually, through his social media to promote local food and agriculture.

Also, The principal agricultural product of St. Kitts is sugarcane; peanuts are now the second crop. On Nevis, sea island cotton and coconuts are the major commodities. Sweet potatoes, onions, tomatoes, cabbages, carrots, and breadfruit are grown for local consumption on both islands, mostly by individual smallholders. St Kitts and Nevis have a tropical climate influenced largely by the northeast trade winds of the Inter-tropical Convergence Zone. The normal annual rainfall of the island is 1 427 mm.
