Alzheimer's disease is a type of dementia that causes problems with memory, thinking, and behavior. Symptoms usually develop slowly and get worse over time, becoming severe enough to interfere with daily tasks.
Rianna Patterson, Founder of the establishment, and Lakeyia Joseph, the present leader of the Dominica Dementia Foundation, attended Alzheimer's Workshop at the Alzheimer's University in London 'On the most proficient method to set up a viable Alzheimer relationship from the 19-22 August 2019.
Alzheimer’s Disease International (ADI) believes that the key to winning the fight against dementia lies in a unique combination of Global Solutions and local knowledge. As such, it works locally, by empowering Alzheimer associations to promote and offer care and support for people with dementia and their careers, while working globally to focus attention on dementia. ADI runs the Alzheimer University, a series of practical workshops aimed at helping the staff and volunteers of Alzheimer associations build and strengthen their organizations.
The Dominica Dementia Foundation was started by Rianna Patterson, Queens Young Leader 2017, and a group of young people, then students of the Dominica State College, in 2016. The current President, Lakeyia Joseph was also a Queens Young Leader in 2018.
“The Queens Young Leader Program was beneficial in fostering my development as a young leader through mentorship and other opportunities, supporting the foundation by promoting our work to a wider audience. This workshop is another stepping stone for us into the world of Dementia. The elderly are our priority.” Rianna Patterson- Founder of Dominica Dementia Foundation
DDF will be collaborating with the Council on Ageing, PHARCS and Lifeline Ministries to raise awareness of issues affecting the elderly especially Dementia during the month of September.
“Dementia is very difficult to cope with especially for careers gradually losing their loved ones. They need all the support they can get. Lifeline is pleased to support this developing organization” Tina Alexander Executive Director of Lifeline Ministries.
