The Interpol General Assembly meets every year to identify the areas where INTERPOL can reinforce the global security architecture.
The meeting was held for three days, from 23 November 2021 to 25 November 2021. Over 470 police chiefs, ministers and senior law enforcement officials from some 160 countries participated in the Interpol General Assembly in Turkey.
On Thursday, international law enforcement body Interpol also elected United Arab Emirates (UAE) official Major General Ahmed Nasser Al Raisi as its president at the annual general meeting.According to Interpol's official website, Al Raisi was selected after three rounds of voting. Under Article 16 of the Constitution of Interpol, the election of the President of Interpol would require a two-thirds majority; If this majority is not obtained after the second ballot, a simple majority will suffice.
Sources said that this election was held during the ongoing 89th Interpol (International Criminal Police Organization) general meeting in Istanbul. "Today's victory is the result of an intense and well-coordinated election campaign across the world," a source said.
Significantly, the election of the chairman of Interpol was being closely monitored as the first Chinese president of the organization, Meng Hongwei, went missing on his way to China in 2018. Then his term was not over.
