After reaching out to government officials to confirm the exit of Mehul Choksi, several senior members of the Cabinet expressed happiness following Choksi’s escape yet refused to provide any official statement, reported Associates Times.
Tragically, the people of India will have to wait for another 10 years before they could get back their money or bring the international fugitive to justice.Born on May 5, 1959, Mehul Choksi is an Indian-born fugitive businessman. He fled India after being wanted by the Indian judicial authorities for criminal conspiracy, cheating, criminal breach of trust, and dishonesty, including corruption, money laundering and delivery of property.
Choksi owns Gitanjali group, a jewellery company that has more than 4000 stores in India. He was not only involved in stock market manipulation in 2013 but arrest warrants against him have also been issued in India following the alleged Punjab national bank fraud case.
Mr Choksi is accused of allegedly perpetrating $2.5 billion fraud along with his nephew Nirav Modi. The latter is also wanted in India and is currently fighting his case against extradition in the UK court.According to information, Mehul Choksi was granted citizenship of Antigua and Barbuda under the citizenship by investment program in November 2017. Antigua and Barbuda government flagged that the citizenship was offered to Mr Choksi following a thorough due diligence process in which Indian authorities cleared him as a clean citizen.
In an effort to recover the money, the enforcement directorate provisionally attached assets worth about $3 million of his jewellery outlet Gitanjali Group.
Taking stringent action, the government of Antigua and Barbuda had initiated the process to revoke the second citizenship granted under the citizenship by investment program to Mr Choksi.
