PM Roosevelt Skerrit meets Canadian High Commissioner Lilian Chatterjee

Roseau, Dominica: Prime Minister of Dominica Dr Roosevelt Skerrit had a courtesy call from Canadian Ambassador Lilian Chatterjee. They discussed areas of cooperation between Dominica and Canada and the strengthening of partnerships in different areas.

Lilian Chatterjee- Canada's Ambassador to Dominica, described the meeting as productive and stated she was "delighted to meet PM Skerrit to discuss our shared values & collaboration going forward,".

Prime Minister Skerrit stated that Dominica and Canada continue to strengthen partnerships in various sectors such as education and climate.

"We discussed areas of cooperation between Dominica and Canada and the strengthening of our partnership in education, climate adaptation and the building of resilient infrastructure, including in the Kalinago Territory," stated the Prime Minister.

Since 1978, Canada and the Commonwealth of Dominica have maintained diplomatic relations. Dominica has Canadian companies working in the renewable energy and software sectors. There are more chances for Canadian enterprises in eco-tourism, infrastructure, and renewable energy as the government attempts to diversify its economy through strong tourism and energy sectors.

Dominica recently commissioned three primary schools, reconstructed with the help of Government of Canada. The Wills Strathmore Stevens Primary School, Morne Jaune Primary School, Stevens Primary School.

Following the devastating Hurricane Maria in 2017, Canada pledged to aid Dominica and the region in reconstruction and climate resilience. This included financial support for the Dominica Climate Resilience Executing Agency (CREAD) and technical help to improve the government's natural catastrophe response.

Canada also helped Dominica rebuild climate-resilient elementary schools by providing disaster risk insurance coverage. Dominica continues to benefit from Canada's natural disaster preparedness and response assistance through the Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency (CDEMA).

Dominica also draws support from the Canada Fund for Local Initiatives and non-governmental organisation sponsorship from Canada. In significant regional and multilateral fora and institutions, such as the Caribbean Development Bank, Dominica and Canada work closely together.
