Guyana: Three girls reportedly drowned on Tuesday night in Massara, Rupununi, Guyana, after they went to the Razor Grass pond to swim. The victims have been identified as Nia Jefferys, aged 6, Michelle Jeffreys, aged 5, and Alicia Dorrick, aged 9.
According to the reports, Nia and Michelle are sisters while Alicia is their cousin and the three of them lives close to each other and went to the pool regularly for a swim. The reports added that the three of them left their home on Tuesday with their books and dolls to play near the pond, after which they usually took a swim in the pond.
On Tuesday, the five-year-old Michelle came back and looked very shocked, but her mother asked her to go back and bring her sisters along.
It was reported that when all of them did not returned home, their parents went to the pond to search for them following which they saw Michelle floating in the water while the two others were nowhere to be seen. They reported the incident to the officials, who then initiated a search in the waters and found the bodies of two other girls behind the waters.
Commander of Regional Police Division Nine, Senior Superintendent Raphael Rose, on Tuesday confirmed the tragedy and said that it is unclear what exactly took place, but the victim’s books and dolls were under a tree near the pond.He also said that foul play is not suspected in the girls’ death, and it appears to be a clear case of drowning.
“There were no signs or marks of violence or something like that, but we are just waiting on the post-mortem report to tell us the cause of their deaths,” Commander Rose said.
The bodies of the three minors have since been taken to the Lethem Regional Hospital, where a post- mortem examination is expected to take place this week.Latest
