Bridgetown: Barbados on Wednesday elected Governor General Dame Sandra Mason to become the country’s first president.
Sandra Mason received the support of all members of the House of Assembly during their special session and secured support from all but one Sentor during a joint sitting of legislature chambers.
However, refuting the vast majority, opposition Senator Caswell Franklyn walked out by not lending his support towards Mason being nominated as the first President of Barbados on November 30, 2021 (Independence Day).
Barbados is on brink of becoming republic by ending its political relationship with Britain. House Speaker, Arthur Holder said that subsequent to the secret voting, Sandra Mason managed to attain the two-third support of the house to become the first President.
Prime Minister of Barbados Mia Amor Mottley and Leader of opposition Bishop Joseph Atherley had commonly nominated Mason and all other 27 members of the national Parliament voted in agreement to make her the President.
The inauguration is scheduled to take place on their 55th anniversary of Independence November 30, 2021, when the island becomes a Republic.
