Caribbean flights affected by Hurricane Maria

A number of flights in the Caribbean region have been cancelled as Hurricane Maria hurtles towards the Leeward Islands.

Last night the 15th tropical depression of the season was confirmed to have reached hurricane status.

Virgin Atlantic confirmed to WIC News that a number of flights from the UK – VS89/90 London to Grenada via St Lucia today and the VS83/84  tomorrow London to St Lucia via Antigua – are delayed by 24 hours. WIC News has reached out to British Airways and a number of American airlines to check their adverse weather schedules.

LIAT saw a number of cancellations yesterday but the disruption has continued into today. Just after 10am AST the carrier announced four more affected routes.

“As this large weather system is currently on a north westerly track through the region, it will continue to cause flight delays and cancellations throughout LIAT’s network as we seek to ensure passenger and crew safety,” the airline said in a statement.

“Passengers who have been booked on these flights will be allowed to rebook and have all change fees and fare differences waived only if they do so on or before Friday 22 September,” LIAT added.

Winair, which is based in Sint Maarten, has not announced any changes to its flight schedule but its offices are already closed due to damage from Hurricane Irma.
