American Airlines announces new service from Miami to Jamaica

American Airlines announced the expansion of its service in Jamaica with the introduction of a new service from Miami to the Ian Fleming International Airport (OCJ) in Boscobel, St. Mary.

This service will be operational from February 24, 2024, and it will be the first US airline to service the Ian Fleming Airport in Jamaica.

The airline, which is headquartered in Texas, made this announcement in December 2023 that it will operate two weekly flights on the route using its Embraer 175 aircraft, which will have a capacity for 76 passengers.

The announcement of this expansion was made by Prime Minister of Jamaica Andrew Holness on his official Facebook account. He was thrilled with the expanded services and outlined, "We are Building Jamaica Stronger." PM Holness announced the development following the test flight of American Airlines' AA 9857, which landed at 1:23 pm in Jamaica.

American Airlines currently offers services to Jamaica from Austin (AUS), Boston (BOS), Chicago (ORD), Charlotte (CLT), Dallas/Fort Worth (DFW), New York (JFK), and Philadelphia (PHL).

Tourism Minister Edmund Bartlett highlighted that it is a big win for the northeastern region and a big win for Jamaica.

He said that American Airlines was the first major carrier to announce this type of move, and he was sure that others would also follow.

Minister Bartlett said that the enhanced accessibility and connectivity are anticipated to lure more tourists to the area, which will lead to increased foot traffic and spending at local eateries.

He also noted the potential for growth and development in the tourism sector and related industries and said that it is a source of great anticipation and positiveness for the local business community.

In addition to this, the Vice President for International Operations, Jose A. Freig, said that after over 45 years of operating in Jamaica, American Airlines is thrilled to continue expanding its service to the island.

He stated that the new route will further boost its position as the leading airline on the island and will offer over 100 weekly flights to the USA.
