Brazil's most famous singer Marília Mendonça killed in a plane crash

Marília Mendonça, one of Brazil's most famous contemporary singers, was killed at the age of 26 in a plane crash, officials said. The entire country is in shock after.

As per reports, four others, including her uncle, crew members, and a producer, were also on board the same aircraft and died in southeastern Minas Gerais state.

An inquiry has been launched to find out the cause of the crash.

A Latin Grammy winner in 2019, Mendonça became popular for focusing on women's struggles with failed relationships.

One of the biggest names in Brazilian country music known as Sertanejo, Mendonça, started her career as a teenager, and in 2016 became a national star with a hit over Injustice. She was known as the "Queen of Suffering" of the country.

Last year, when concerts were cancelled due to the pandemic, she appeared in a series of online appearances. One of them set the record for the most-watched live stream globally, with 3.3 million peak viewers on YouTube.

In 2020, she was the most-listened artist in Brazil on Spotify.

Mendonça, who had a two-year-old son, performed at a concert in Caratinga, 12 km (seven miles) from the accident scene on Friday evening. Just a few hours before getting killed in the accident, she published a video on social media in which she was preparing to board the private plane.

The singer's staff had earlier said she was alive and well after the news of the accident came out. Television footage later showed the damaged plane at a waterfall in a mountainous area. Just minutes after the death was confirmed.

Famous Brazilian footballer Neymar stated that he "cannot believe the news".

Singer Anitta also expressed shock, and she could not believe the news and wanted to believe there was still some hope.
