Prime Minister of St Kitts and Nevis Dr Timothy Harris stated that some countries underestimated the COVID-19 and are now regretting.
St Kitts and Nevis have now begun the first five day week of limited operations since the lockdown late march. The island nation now has only one coronavirus patient left.
Prime Minister Dr Timothy Harris stated in leadership matters on Monday evening that long, difficult war is not yet over, for many the battle is just beginning, but in St Kitts and Nevis, a glimmer of light is now visible from a distance.
"Chaos follow elsewhere; there is no chaos here," added Dr Harris.
Furthermore, he added that St Kitts and Nevis was the first country in the region to close its borders and reject cruise-ships, while other countries allowed. He said that the country avoided community transmission and there are no casualties so far.
"We have only one case in the Federation; fourteen cases fully recovered no deaths and no hospitalisations in St Kitts and Nevis." stated the Prime Minister.
Besides this, he added that the country has not seen its people dying, and fortunately, the health system of St Kitts and Nevis was not overwhelmed because of the coronavirus patients. He applauded the safety and health guidelines put in place to tackle the virus situation on the twin-island nation.
The leader stated that the government would slowly start to open the country again, sensibly and systematically by following the recommendation of WHO and PAHO.
He added that St Kitts and Nevis has the largest and most comprehensive stimulus package in the region to support the people and it is targetting those who are going through hardships because of COVID-19.
"We are financing our stimulus package on our own, without any borrowed funds to date." stated the leader.
He added that the government of St Kitts and Nevis has also paid off the debt of 117million dollars owning to IMF.
