Group of amateur chefs mistook toxic toads for bullfrogs

Officials were unable to identify which species of toad was consumed.

Police in South Korea have attributed the death of a 57-year-old man to eating poisoned toads.

A group of men caught five amphibians near the city of Daejeon last month.

Days later they cooked and ate them, believing that they were bullfrogs.

One of the men, who has not been named, was sick soon after the meal and died in hospital the next day.

The other men presented similar symptoms but survived.

When police examined the meal they found bufotenin, which is commonly found in toad toxin.

South Korea's Yonhap news agency is reporting that some of the animals that were caught were toads that looked identical to bullfrogs.

Food writer Ashton Bishop told WIC News that bullfrogs are a delicacy in a number of countries, including South Korea and Namibia.
