North Korea has fired a new ballistic missile, according to South Korean news reports citing military officials.
The missile is understood to have flown east, although at this stage it's not clear how far it went or wether it flew over Japan.
The South Korean military is analysing the launch with the United States, South Korea's joint chiefs said, according to the Yonhap news agency.
The Pentagon said it was still assessing the "probable" launch, which took place at approximately 03:30 local time (2.30pm AST).
Two authoritative US government sources said earlier that US government experts believed North Korea could conduct a new missile test within days, in what would be its first launch since it fired a missile over Japan in mid-September.
