Tragic fire leaves 17 homeless in Chantimelle, Grenada

Grenada: A tragic fire ravaged the village of Chantimelle in northern rural Grenada on Tuesday, leaving 17 people homeless and destroying five homes. Preliminary reports indicate that children aged three and four were present in the home where the fire is believed to have originated. The police officials have launched an investigation into the incident to find the cause of the fire. Prime Minister Dickon Mitchell also addressed the incident on Tuesday during a parliament session.

The Ministry of Social and Community Development swiftly mobilized the Royal Grenada Police Force to the scene to assess the situation and provide support.

While addressing the incident, PM Mitchell said, "I don't know what the cause of the fire was so I can't speak to the cause of the fire, but there is certainly a pattern that I have seen including in my constituency. But many times, the fires are started by children, who are left unsupervised and have access to matches."

As affected families grapple with the loss of their homes and belongings, many have sought refuge with neighbours and friends while awaiting further assistance from relevant government agencies and individuals.

Curtis John, one of the victims, recounted the harrowing moment when he learned of the inferno engulfing his residence while he was away.

"I was at work when my first son called me and told me about the fire. So, I told the supervisor to look at the situation, and he told me not to wait. When I reach here, five houses were burning right down to the ground", he shared. Despite the devastation, John commended both government agencies and the community for their prompt response and support in the wake of the tragedy.

Meanwhile, police continue their investigations into the origin of the fire, though initial findings suggest the possibility of an accidental cause.

Parliamentary representative for the area, Joseph Andall, upon receiving the news, immediately left parliament to rush to the scene and stand in solidarity with his constituents. He said that the Ministry of Social Services promptly intervened to offer temporary housing for the affected families.

They have been relocated to the Chinese housing project situated in Villa, Sauteurs, St. Patrick. Minister Andall highlighted the community's swift mobilization of urgent aid for the families. He pledged to collaborate with them to initiate community-driven efforts aimed at assisting the affected families in their journey to rebuild their lives.

Andall emphasized the families' urgent need for essential items such as appliances, furniture, clothing, food, and linens. He urged individuals to generously donate whatever they can to ensure the families' comfort during this challenging period.
