Jamaica: Minister of Health and Wellness Dr. Christopher Tufton informed that Jamaica has reported no cases of the Delta variant of the coronavirus that is blamed for a new wave of deaths and infections globally.
Dr Tufton further noted that the Ministry has prepared for the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), the United States-based Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC) and the Trinidad-based Caribbean Public Health Agency (CARPHA) to test samples for any mutations that would pose a concern.
Also, he stated earlier this week; health officials listed to Cabinet on tests that they had taken from testing late last week.
“We had 3 locations that we sent samples to, and we had committed that every week we would send out 100 or so samples at 1 of the 3 locations for testing, to carry out the examination as to whether the Delta variant is here,” Tufton added.
“Results we received last week, we did not get the Delta strain in those outcomes. I think we received back about 60 or so results, but every week we will remain to report based on those results,” he noted.
But Tufton added that there is a worrying trend of Jamaicans seeking medical help too late for COVID-19, resulting in increased deaths.
“We are observing persons who have signs and who try to self-medicate and to find their own solutions for 1 reason or the other also end up at the hospital when they are in an advanced state of illness & that is unwise. I think that has also added to the severity of the cases in hospitals, and by extension the ultimate outcome of death,” he noted.
He is urging Jamaicans that “if you are unclear of your health, seek medical attention, get tested, the system provides for that”.
