While Mehul Choksi is neither a Dominican citizen nor owns any interest in the country, it is surprising to see the LOP Lennox Linton come out in support of a man who is a declared fugitive and criminal by the government of India.
WIC News correspondent in Roseau, Dominica, talked to several locals; John Samuel 39 said, "We have nothing to do with the guy Choksi, the court is looking into the matter, he illegally entered Dominica, we don't know with what intentions, the court should do the best in the interest of the public."Another resident, Brandon Webster, 50, stated, "Dominica is no home to criminals; I am shocked to see Lennox Linton supporting a criminal, he should be ashamed of himself,"
"India is suffering from a major COVID-19 crisis as medical infrastructure is crumbling, if people like Choksi would have been extradited to India, it would have provided that country with ample money to strengthen their medical facilities to treat COVID-19 patients. Mehul Choksi is responsible for the people who have died due to lack of medical infrastructure in India," Webster added.
Venesha stated, "Why is the Dominican opposition taking so much interest in a matter that does not involve the general public of the country, the least he can do is do the rightful and not get the country insulted internationally,"
Mehul Choksi is an Indian fugitive who defrauded India's second-largest public lender Panjab National Bank (PNB), with $2 billion. Before the fraud came into the limelight, Choksi got citizenship from Antigua and Barbuda in 2017 and have been residing there ever since. However, as his extradition hearing to India started coming near, he allegedly left Antigua on May 23, 2021, for Cuba. While on his way to Cuba, he made a stop in Dominica from where he was captured.
However, the hearing is now further adjourned.
