Barbados: The Barbados Defense Force (BDF), as part of its mandate to defend and protect the interests of Barbados, continues to increase its response and dedication to its duties and responsibilities.

Given the effects of the global pandemic in the maritime domain, there have been particular challenges in combating the illegal drug trade. However, it is credited to inter-agency efforts at the local and regional level, disruptions and foreclosures in this division have been successful.

To date, there has been a notable rise in illicit trafficking. In particular, during the period January 1 to October 13, 2021, the BDF Maritime Unit, the Barbados Coast Guard (BCG), successfully seized the drugs, weapons and vessels pitched following.

Compared to the year 2020, these statistics reflect an increase of 11% and 50% respectively, in the bans of marijuana and cocaine. In addition, they highlight a 467% increase in the number of non-nationals arrested in connection with these related crimes.

Analyzes suggest that one of the factors contributing to this increase is the current socio-economic environment, facing the region and local demand.

In 2020, the BCG carried out several anti-narcotics operations, which led to the confiscation of 5,277 lbs of Marijuana and 162 lbs of Cocaine as well as 5 small arms, 1 Draco AR 47 and a supply of ammunition. Seven (7) vessels, 6 non-nationals and 7 nationals were also detained and charged in connection with maritime drug offences.

However, the Barbados Coast Guard remained dedicated, not only to their primary role, but also executed efforts to assist the Government of Barbados in its battle against COVID-19. All those taken into police custody are subject to mandatory testing for COVID-19.

As a consequence of these measures, no positive cases of COVID were detected in 2020. So far for 2021, one positive case, a non-national, has been detected and this individual has been isolated in accordance with state policy.

The Barbados Coast Guard continues bound to the territorial defense of Barbados and the maintenance of a safe and secure maritime environment.
