PM Roosevelt Skerrit meets Patricia Scotland, discusses issues of concern

Commonwealth Secretary-General Patricia Scotland QC paid a courtesy call to the Prime Minister of Dominica, Dr Roosevelt Skerrit, on Friday and discussed several issues, including the impact of COVID-19.

The Secretary-General briefed the Prime Minister on the upcoming Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM), scheduled to be held in Rwanda in June 2022, and discussed areas of interest to Dominica, including the global impact of the coronavirus pandemic.

During her visit to Dominica, the Secretary-General will meet with various government ministers to discuss the environment and climate change, trade, education, gender, health, youth and sports.

The Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting meets the leaders of all the countries in the Commonwealth every two years in a different member state. This meeting is chaired by that country's Prime Minister or President, who takes over as Commonwealth Chair until the next meeting.

During every CHOGM, Queen Elizabeth II, who is the head of the Commonwealth, was there. Her formal participation began in 1997, but she was there every time from 1973 to 2011. Because she was 87 years old, she didn't go on long trips. The Prince of Wales took her place at the meeting in 2013. The Queen went to the 2015 summit in Malta and the 2018 summit in London, which was pushed back one year.
